Jenna Keeler, Teacher

Hello! My name is Jenna Keeler. I have been teaching at a charter school for six years now and absolutely love it. My first four years I taught third grade and the last two have been fifth grade. This year will be my last year of teaching students I have already taught once in third grade. Math is my favorite subject to teach and currently the only subject I teach. I am originally from south Florida and ended up in Augusta after earning my degree and playing volleyball for Augusta University.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I am from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where my parents still live. My mother is a high school math teacher and my father works in construction. My brother also works in construction in Jacksonville, FL. So needless to say, we both took after our parents in the career department.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I have been teaching upper elementary for the past six years. I love the ages 8-11 because the students are independent but still love their teacher. Math is my favorite subject! I am currently working on my masters and plan to go in administration within the next ten years, however I’m not in a rush to leave the classroom. I love spending my days with children and watching them grow!

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
It’s a chain but Carrabba’s is my all time favorite! I also love Mellow Mushroom, Outback and Salsa’s.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I’ve lived in Augusta for 9 years now.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
I would say my teammates and my fiancé. My volleyball teammates came from all over the United States and my best friend was from Canada, so we each had our own experiences to share. I met my fiancé in Augusta as well who is from Alabama.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
Australia! I think the beaches are beautiful and I would love to see the wildlife.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
Grey’s Anatomy all the way! My favorite movie is How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carey.

Q: What advice would you give to people?
Work hard & be kind.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
I want to go skydiving just to say I did, I am extremely scared of heights.

Q: What is your go to band when you can’t decide what to listen to?
It’s a single artist but Taylor Swift.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Probably the hibachi places. Myioko is my favorite but that is where my friends and I celebrate birthdays.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
Hope King! She is a teaching queen! She knows so much about student engagement with such fun ideas to tie into the curriculum. I would meet at Starbucks just so we can sit and talk for hours.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
The golf carts during the masters. I love looking for them when the tournament is coming up.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
I still see myself in the Augusta area. I would love to buy a house in Columbia county and start a family. Professionally, either in the classroom or an assistant principal.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
Professionally, I am a huge perfectionist. Most people know, but not to the degree I am.

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
Alaska

Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
Favorite month is November. Holiday is Christmas. June 20 is the best day.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
The last day of school. Even though it can be sad and hectic, it is so much fun and the kids are always best behaved.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
Social media. I follow many teachers online, and while I don’t compare myself, I always know there is so much more I can learn.

Frosted cranberry and sweet pea
